Revealing Cancer’s Hidden Qualities

The Cancer archetype is playing a prominent role in understanding how to use the energies of our Cancer New Moon.

Specifically, there are hidden qualities and strengths within the archetype of Cancer that are being revealed. These hidden qualities are often hidden under the external shell associated with Cancer. This external shell refers to Cancer’s symbol of the crab. What’s normally hidden and now being revealed is emphasized by the Solar Eclipse.

This article reveals the hidden strengths associated with the powerful sign of Cancer, and how you can harness these hidden qualities of Cancer in your life.

The Hidden Elements of the Cancer Archetype

Our Cancer New Moon is setting the stage to reveal hidden aspects of your personality that can lead directly to increased freedom of thought.

As we take a look at the hidden elements contained within the archetype of Cancer it will help us put into perspective exactly how to use this month’s theme of hidden strength and the Solar eclipse in a practical way.  These hidden elements are fundamental in understanding the “pure principle” of this archetype.

These hidden elements of Cancer include the emotional strength to decide your best future. The ability to make clear decisions is part of the Cancer archetype. Expanding on that archetype includes an emotional sensitivity in understanding how you’re connected to something bigger than yourself.

This aspect of connection leads to the traditional associations of Cancer connected to home and family.  Understanding these underlying strengths that lead to the Cancer associations with Home and Family is a good way to connect with the larger potentials of this New Moon.

Pure Principles of Cancer

As the cardinal water sign, Cancer is one of the most powerful of the twelve Zodiac archetypes. It is ruled by the Moon, giving it the strength of adaptability and adjustment to change. Through this connection to the Moon, within Cancer is hidden a quality of “pure emotional strength.”  I emphasize this quality of inner strength because Cancer is commonly portrayed as a sign of emotional weakness and/or introversion.  This is a misunderstanding of the strength associated with sensitivity.

Within Cancer there is the strength of dedication, allegiance, and the ability to make tough, gut wrenching, emotional decisions that are extremely difficult. It’s this quality of inner strength that gives Cancer the natural ability to connect with others, through a heightened sense of belonging to something greater. This is the basis for the traditional Cancer symbols of home (inner strength) and family (connection).

In addition to these qualities of inner strength, Cancer also possesses an unconscious ability to be sensitive to the emotional fields of others.

The reason Cancer sometimes gets a bad rap is because it takes time, nurturing, and support to develop what’s naturally hidden within the Cancer archetype. With today’s culture, the natural emotional strength of Cancer is not encouraged to develop and often remains hidden, which leads to the experience of being wounded or weakened by the outer world.

Common Misconceptions of the Cancer Archetype

Astrology ChartThe emotional strength of Cancer enables us to nurture ourselves. Because of Cancer’s power of emotional sensitivity, without inner strength it’s common for the personality to develop some shadow aspects as adaptations or protection. These adaptations can be understood through two misconceptions related to the Cancer archetype.

First misconception: The zodiac quality of Cancer (the sign of the crab) is commonly described as having a protective shell on the outside, because on the inside the archetype is too emotionally fragile and needs protection.

Second misconception: Cancer is said to be ruled by the subconscious and the emotions. As a result, Cancer is easily emotionally wounded, weak, and uses emotional manipulation to compensate.

These common misconceptions are related to our common misunderstandings about emotional strength. Cancer is not emotionally fragile. It’s also not “ruled” by the subconscious or emotions. Rather, Cancer is ruled by strength of character, dedication, and the connection to others. This is the true meaning of home and family.

Using Our Cancer New Moon Theme to Strengthen Your Resolve

The Cancer New Moon theme of revealing what’s hidden is drawn from several factors, including a conjunction with the Moon’s north node in opposition to the historic Saturn/Pluto conjunction in Capricorn.

The North Node conjunction is revealing the opportunity for a new direction and a new allegiance to something different and better.

The opposition to the Saturn/Pluto conjunction is revealing patterns of suppression (Saturn) in order to completely transform society (Pluto) with the true power of change and the coming Age of Aquarius.  I call this conjunction in Capricorn as historic because it’s a once-in-a-lifetime configuration. The effects of this will likely play out for hundreds of years.

These factors of revealing what’s hidden combine through the Sabian archetype for the New Moon at 11° Cancer.

11° CANCER — A COMIC CARICATURING A WELL- KNOWN PERSONALITY
THEME: DECONDITIONING
ARCHETYPE: The value of humor in developing objectivity and independence of mind.
COMMENTARY: Satire and irony are intellectual forms of humor which free the mind of prejudice and unconscious popular trends. Laughter deconditions and often paves the way to a realization of how we are unconsciously conditioned by culture, with an underlying need for intellectual freedom. It represents a necessary deconditioning step toward pure individuality.

To summarize, the use of humor supports our intellectual freedom. Our ability to use humor supports freedom of thought and enables us to see beyond the surface of things.

Our New Moon is emphasizing the theme of revealing what’s been hidden. With the Sabian in mind, what we see is a necessary “deconditioning” (Sabian theme) of what we’ve previously been conditioned to believe, in order to reveal what’s really going on in the world we live in.  This is not only at the personal level, revealing our own hidden strengths, but also revealing what we, as a culture, have been conditioned to believe and how we should think.

The Eclipse Factor

The influence of the Solar Eclipse in the New Moon chart is further emphasizing the patterns of revealing what’s hidden.  This is further emphasized by the overall significance of the Moon as the ruler of Cancer.

This Eclipse emphasis points directly to the adaptability (Moon) needed to make adjustments (Moon) in the connections between our emotions and thoughts so that as individuals we aren’t just going along with the flow of the status quo and what has been in the past, but instead we are able to choose based on our inner strength of character.

This solar eclipse adds purpose in our pursuit of freedom and our capacity to use our hidden strength for something larger.

Summary

The power of our New Moon lies in the strength to see what’s hidden in order to expand our thinking toward new levels of freedom. The emphasis within this chart lies in the strength of intellectual freedom, including the hidden inner strength to de-condition ourselves away from the mainstream narrative.  In the coming days pay attention to what area of life reveals a hidden fountain of strength that has perhaps gone unnoticed.

Happy New Moon,
