Revelations from an Historic Lunar Eclipse
Our Capricorn Full Moon eclipse is all about expanding awareness and how to use that awareness to nurture what’s precious and worthy of hanging onto.
This Lunar eclipse will be one of the most intensely felt eclipses in recent history. This article will explore what’s really behind all of this intensity so that you can navigate through the next several weeks with a degree of ease.
As I discuss the signature of our Cancer/Capricorn eclipse, keep in mind that the energies of this cycle are extremely complex. My goal is to keep this discussion broad and general with an emphasis on the deeper processes occurring.
One of the most significant processes affecting the levels of intensity in our current eclipse is the historic Saturn/Pluto conjunction in Capricorn. I say “historic” because this game-changing configuration only occurs every several hundred years, and is always characterized by movements of revolution and rebellion against oppressive authority. The long-term effects of this Saturn/Pluto conjunction will play out well into the future as the Aquarian age unfolds, and further marked by Pluto’s entrance into Aquarius in 2024.
Expanding Awareness: Seeing Beyond Contrast and Conflict
Our current Lunar cycle, beginning with the Solar Eclipse of July 2nd, is ultimately a cycle of successful new growth. To be more specific, there is a signature of success that leads to new growth and therefore reaches its full potential. With this idea of success as a backdrop within the Lunar cycle, it’s important to clarify the role that new awareness plays in maximizing personal success during the current eclipse cycle.
One of the difficulties with the concept of new awareness is the inherent challenge of how one becomes aware of something, where no awareness previously exists? In other words, we don’t know what we don’t know.
Using pure principles of astrology, the easiest way to develop new awareness is through the signature of an opposition which offers objective insight into something not previously realized. This happens naturally every month at the Full Moon. Through this understanding of the role of astrological oppositions we can see how the insights we receive through experiences of “contrast and conflict” become the basis of expanded awareness, and enable us to participate more intentionally in these natural processes of growth. In my astrology practice, one of reasons for my success with clients is the way I use this expanded understanding of astrological oppositions in a chart as a marker for greater awareness.
A quick look at the current Full Moon chart illustrates the significant role that oppositions are playing in our eclipse. Remember that oppositions are the key avenue for expanding awareness, and experiences of “contrast or conflict” are often our best avenues for creating the awareness necessary for growth. This discussion of oppositions can give a new context to the current preponderance of conflict and contrast as extensively portrayed on social media and the nightly news.
Awareness is the key. Conflict is simply the catalyst for new awareness to occur. The result is a greater understanding of the “bigger picture” or a larger context of our personal experiences.
History in the Making: Saturn/Pluto in Capricorn
Before we explore the significant role of this historic Saturn/Pluto marker in Capricorn, it’s important to remember the current New Moon theme: “Revealing What’s Hidden” (see article). The theme of the Cancer New Moon and Solar Eclipse is revealing the hidden strength contained within individuality and personal freedom. With the Solar eclipse, the connection to something larger comes from a sense of freedom that enables us to connect to what truly matters in life. The Solar Eclipse revealed new levels of hidden inner strength, preparing us for the Full Moon, enabling us to see what’s been hidden in the world around us.
The Saturn/Pluto conjunction in Capricorn represents the power and control of the collective over the individual. What’s being revealed at this eclipse is a new awareness of just how out-of-balance the power relationship currently is of the collective over the individual.
Whenever Saturn and Capricorn are involved, what affects each of us at an individual level has its origin within the collective. What we are experiencing now is the culmination of generation after generation of the collective shadow of control overriding the individual through the abuse of power. This current collective dynamic is the shadow side of Pluto in Capricorn and has developed over a long period of time. It must now come to some type of conclusion in order for the Aquarian age to become energized in a positive way.
To summarize, the current Saturn/Pluto conjunction in Capricorn represents the full pendulum swing between pure individuality vs. collective control. This gives rise to our current experience of the shadow of collective power, operating in full force to exert absolute control over individuals.
The Cancer Archetype as a Universal Antidote
Each Full Moon activates opposite signs within the Zodiac, in this case Cancer and Capricorn. The power of the individual contained within the Cancer archetype is the universal antidote to the current issue of the collective’s abuse of power (Pluto in Capricorn). The individualism and inner freedom inherent in Cancer balances out the extremes of these tendencies of Pluto in Capricorn.
In my last article I outlined the full potential of the power of Cancer. What I didn’t mention was the fact that Cancer is equally as powerful as is Capricorn. In other words, individualism is as powerful as globalism.
Perhaps we can understand the significance of our current point in history by looking at the last time Pluto was in Capricorn, which was 250 years ago (1762-78), during the events that led to the Revolutionary War and the birth of the United States of America.
At that time, the forces of individualism and nationalism broke free from the tyranny of the British attempt to collectively control the world by using the slave colonies as their pawns in global domination. We all know how that worked out for the British idea of globalism in the late 1700’s.
Instead, we had the birth of a new nation, founded in individualism based on individual freedoms, institutionalized in the Declaration of Independence, guaranteeing individual rights and freedoms.
250 years later we find ourselves at a similar crossroads, with the same dynamic of oppression playing out under different, and perhaps even more significant, circumstances.
This Lunar Cancer/Capricorn eclipse may in fact be the most important turning point in our entire lifetime. The opportunity for new awareness with this eclipse has the power to break the momentum of destructive globalism (Saturn/Pluto in Capricorn) more than any other recent event.
A Decisive Turning Point in History, both Collectively and Individually
Let’s take a quick look at our Full Moon Chart. I would like everyone to notice the stellium (grouping) in Cancer/Leo in direct opposition to our historic Saturn/Pluto conjunction in Capricorn. As an added emphasis, the power of the individual is emphasized in our chart by the presence of Leo in the stellium. Leo is contributing to individuality through creative expression.
What’s not apparent in the chart, but crucial to understanding the extent of this eclipse, is the position of the Moon’s South Node located at 18° Capricorn. The South Node isn’t visible in the chart, but it’s always located opposite of the North Node.
The reason for emphasizing the South Node is because it represents a decisive turning point in our history. In our current chart, the South Node indicates what we need to polarize, or turn away from. The significance is further emphasized by the conjunction with this historic Lunar eclipse.
We have the potential now to make a big shift in our awareness. In general, a Lunar eclipse brings to light a new dynamic not previously operating in its full capacity. The current eclipse brings a new awareness of the global abuse of power and the shadow elements of global control. The eclipse emphasizes the elements of what’s been hidden and is now being revealed.
The Sabian archetype for the South Node at 18° Capricorn emphasizes this polarizing shift and what we are turning away from.

THEME: POLITICAL POWER
ARCHETYPE: The protection afforded to individuals and groups by powerful institutions in charge of maintaining order.
COMMENTARY: Institutional power can be used to control groups or individuals, especially when it is required to maintain a specific outcome of social order or social relationships. This ultimate expression of power needs to be balanced by justice and compassion, rather than elitism justifying authority through abuse of power.
What we have here in the Sabian archetype for the South Node is a direct reference point to the past, with an opportunity to move in the opposite direction as we embrace the future.
Let’s put this in perspective. On an individual level, we have a new ability to see contrast with the awareness of larger perspectives, instead of only experiencing conflict. As a whole, humanity has a historic opportunity now to reverse directions away from a collision course with destructive globalism and totalitarianism. Once again, awareness of a larger perspective is the key to seeing what is going on in your life, both individually and as part of the collective.
Individually, each of us has the opportunity to choose a path moving forward that is right for us. This must be independent of what the status quo thinks, projects, or tries to dictate.
Summary
This Lunar eclipse is full of signatures of inner strength and personal leadership. On a personal note, I’m thrilled to look around at my world with a new awareness in the coming days, noticing where and how this historic eclipse will play out in. This is all part of our preparation for the massive positive changes coming to our planet after Pluto enters Aquarius in January, 2024.
Collectively, we have the opportunity now to reject the current push toward controlling the individual in the name of globalism (Saturn/Pluto/So. Node in Capricorn). In the same way that the colonies stood up to the British attempts at control 250 years ago, we now have the opportunity to stand up against subversive forces within our government and the world, and honor individualism and individual freedoms.
We all need encouragement to access our inner strength and inner sense of freedom. From this increased perspective, look around and you’ll and see what’s coming into your awareness from the dark to the light. Notice where corruption is being exposed and who is fighting against the corruptive patterns of globalism and control.
Happy Full Moon,
Steven
